ATLANTA, GA (October 2, 2024) — GLMA, a national organization committed to ensuring health equity for LGBTQ+ communities and equality for LGBTQ+ health professionals, has presented AvitaCare Atlanta Nurse Practitioner and Clinician Lead Terry Hackworth with its 2024 Achievement in Practice Award. The honor was announced during the organization’s annual conference on LGBTQ+ health.

As a clinician lead at AvitaCare Atlanta, which he has called his medical home for almost 10 years, Terry guides clinicians in following best practices in LGBTQ+ care provision while also directly providing care to patients from all walks of life. He specializes in offering his patients the latest advances in HIV prevention and treatment, gender-affirming and sexual wellness care, and primary care served up in a warm, inclusive, and safe environment, and is known for developing leading-edge programs tailored toward the wellness of LGBTQ+ patients.

Identifying as a gay male gives him a unique perspective when it comes to understanding the needs of his patients, Terry says. “Heartbreakingly, even in 2024, many of my patients tell me that they’ve previously encountered judgment not only by their family and friends but by the very people who care for them in their time of need: their healthcare providers,” he says. “Working one-on-one with patients and meeting them where they are builds trust. When patients can be honest and upfront with their providers, it empowers them to receive the best care.”

Terry received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Morehead State University, Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Doctor of Nursing Practice from Augusta University. He is certified as an HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine and precepts nursing students through the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Georgia State University, and Chamberlain University.
